For those of you who may not know, I have a daughter who was born with congenital heart defects (CHD). She spent the first 102 days of her life in the NICU and had two open-heart surgeries before her first birthday, among other surgeries. She's now a healthy, happy two-year-old, and we're hoping that she won't need another heart surgery until she's a teenager. You can read more about it in my latest blog on MySpace.
In honor of Hope, I will be donating 50% of the sales price of every one of my CDs sold during the entire month of February to Mended Little Hearts, a wonderful organization that helps spread awareness and offers support to those affected by congenital heart defects.
1 in 120 babies are born with some type of heart defect, yet when my daughter's condition was first diagnosed, I had never even heard of congenital heart defects. This is why it's so important to me to help spread awareness any chance I get. So be sure and pick up a copy or two of my CD, Bettin' Woman, right here on my website, and when you do, you will be contributing to a very important cause.
Thanks so much,
Kelly Dees
In other news, if you missed the Sarasota Blues Fest this past Saturday, November 3rd, you missed a great time! I went on with The Venturas Band as part of this year's All-Stars line-up, and boy can these guys play. After I sang a few tunes, the wonderful Miss Julie Black, Angel for Blues, took the mic. What a great voice she has! Freight Train Annie, another awesome local performer, took over after Julie heated things up, and then Jaime Fox tore up the stage. Finally, the ladies all jammed together with The Venturas. It was so cool being up there with all of these very talented Women. Felt like a mini-WiB Festival, right there in Sarasota! And the crowd was unbelievable! I was so impressed by the number of people who were already there when we went on at around 1PM, and then by the end of the day, when Buddy Guy came on, there was just a sea of people. Special thanks to Barbara Strauss for making me a part of this year's line-up.
Meanwhile, I couldn't help but wonder how things were going in Wilmington, NC, where the 2nd Annual Women in Blues Festival was taking place. Though I couldn't make it to Wilmington personally, one of my songs was chosen for their very first National Women in Blues Compilation CD, produced by JoMar Records, which went on sale at the show. I later heard that the festival up there was a huge success. Sure wish I could've made it up that way! I'm definitely hoping to be up there for next year's big event. To check out the National Women in Blues (WiB), visit their website at http://www.nationalwomeninblues.com. You should also soon be able to purchase the compilation CD online there. With artists like Julie Black, Angel for Blues, Sandy Atkinson, Gina Sicilia, and many more, you'll be glad you did.
